Le magiche notti di Piccadilly Circus nei primi 50 anni del ‘900



Piccadilly Circus è una delle mete immancabili per qualunque turista voglia visitare Londra, per i tipici cartelloni illuminati e bus rossi a due piani che passano di lì. In effetti la piazza era stata pensata nel 1819, alla sua costruzione, proprio come luogo di congiunzione con la trafficata Regent Street e tutti i negozi, teatri e luoghi di ritrovo della zona. Il Circus del nome fa riferimento alla forma circolare, persa però nel 1886 di Shaftesbury Avenue. Nel primo decennio del ‘900 è stata aperta la stazione metropolitana e sono state fissate le prime insegne luminose, divenute poi caratteristiche di Piccadilly. All’epoca circondavano l’intera piazza, ma con l’aumentare dei costi della pubblicità sono diminuite; oggi c’è una sola grande facciata di un palazzo piena di video in ripetizione 24h su 24.
